COPIM is terribly saddened to learn of the death of Florence Piron, founder of the scholar-led open access publisher Éditions science et bien commun and passionate advocate for cognitive and epistemic justice and decolonial, not-for-profit approaches to open science.
A professor in the Department of Information and Communication at Université Laval in Quebec, Canada, Professor Piron has been deeply committed to the enhancement and dissemination of open access to knowledge in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa and Haiti, focusing on multilingual publishing and making visible local languages.
Florence Piron also participated in COPIM workshops and working groups, sharing her tremendous experience and wisdom with us while we have been developing our infrastructures and governance models.
To remember her we wanted to share this recent panel at LSE that Florence took part in, and in which she showcased many of the principles she stood for.
