First OA book published by OtF press

COPIM and our partner presses hit a big milestone this week- the first book funded by our library membership programme is published today, with 5 more titles in the pipeline. You can read and download the book here: https://muse.jhu.edu/book/97875

Central European University (CEU) Press announced today the publication of a new academic monograph for specialist and general readers. It is the first of their ‘open access’ books funded entirely by the university library members of the Opening the Future programme. This book is freely available worldwide to read and download from Project MUSE, and will also be on other open access platforms like OAPEN. (It's also available to buy in print).

Frances Pinter, CEU Press Executive Chair said,

This publication marks a major milestone for our Opening the Future initiative to do away with author facing BPCs and to enable equitable access to both publishing and reading without paywalls. It is the first of several OA books that are out soon from CEU Press and I’m grateful to the libraries supporting our efforts.

If you don’t know already, Opening the Future is a collective subscription model that, through its membership scheme, makes library funds go further: achieving the dual objectives of increasing collections and supporting Open Access. Put simply, library members pay a small annual fee to get DRM-free, unlimited access to a selection of the well-regarded press backlist, with perpetual access after three years; the membership revenue is then used to produce new OA monographs. You can watch a 60 second video explaining the model on the website.

Our other partner publisher, Liverpool University Press is also running an Opening the Future programme - you can read more about that, and sign up, at https://lup.openingthefuture.net/. CEU Press is offering titles on the history of communism, transitions to democracy and Central European history and culture; while LUP is offering books on Hispanic culture, including literature, cinema, popular culture, theory and history.
