CEU Press announces 8th & 9th OA titles to be funded by Opening the Future

Central European University (CEU) Press is pleased to announce the selection of two more open access books that have been funded entirely by library members of the Opening the Future (OtF) programme.

Due for release in July 2022 the two new books will be freely available to download or read online.

  • Free-Market Socialists: European Émigrés Who Made Capitalist Culture in America, 1918–1968, Joseph Malherek. A narrative of immigration and adaptation, focusing on the lives of three remarkable European émigrés who fled the Nazis; interweaving their biographies with those of their wives, colleagues, and friends with whom they collaborated on projects that would shape the material environment and consumer culture of the United States.

  • The Historical Construction of National Consciousness, Selected Writings, Jenő Szűcs (author), Gábor Klaniczay, Balázs Trencsényi, Gábor Gyáni (eds.). English-language edition of a rich selection of the depth and breadth of the writings of Jenő Szűcs. With an introduction by the editors locating Szűcs in a transnational context, it offers a unique insight into the complex and sensitive debate on national identity in post-1945 East Central Europe.

Further details on the books will be announced on publication. The seven other OA titles funded by OtF, already published or due out this summer are:

  1. Words in Space and Time: Historical Atlas of Language Politics in Modern Central Europe, Tomasz Kamusella

  2. Constructing Identities over Time: “Bad Gypsies” and “Good Roma” in Russia and Hungary, Jekatyerina Dunajeva

  3. Staged Otherness: Ethnic Shows in Central and Eastern Europe, 1850–1939, Dagnosław Demski & Dominika Czarnecka (eds)

  4. Memory Crash: Politics of History In and Around Ukraine, 1980s-2010s, Georgiy Kasianov

  5. Everyday Life under Communism and After: Consumption and Lifestyle in Hungary, 1945–2000, Tibor Valuch

  6. Under the Radar: Tracking Western Radio Listeners in the Soviet Union, R. Eugene Parta.
